From time to time I get e-mails or phone calls asking if I can make a psychiatric evaluation in English. So I decided to write a couple of sentences for those who are searching for an English speaking psychiatrist in Izmir, Türkiye (Turkey). The answer to the above question is “yes I can make a psychiatric evaluation in English”. Although I don’t particularly prefer doing that, I will do my best if you want. Psychotherapy is totally different: It requires very complex language skills so as a result I don’t do psychotherapy in English.

The main reason for not preferring English is that I am not a native English speaker. Education media in the Hacettepe University Medical School (which I am graduated from) was in English. I have been reading and writing in English for almost 40 years. I will not be humble about that. I am good at it. I have also spent a year in USA as a visiting scholar at University of Virginia. But still my speaking and listening skills are a little worse than my reading and writing skills. Also switching from one language to another instantaneously is not easy and psychiatric evaluation in English takes more effort and time.

I know some very well educated psychiatrists who can communicate as good as or maybe better than me. Do they accept patients speaking English?
